When Jim was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 43, he was given nine months to live. The diagnosis caught him by surprise - and he didn't have time for illness. He was a busy father, husband, brother, mentor and businessman.

Jim Stynes never took the easy road, on or off the field. He loved a challenge. He pushed himself, and worked hard to help others realise their potential. The same could be said about his cancer journey. Knowing his odds weren't good, Jim gave his all to trying to beat the disease. He embraced life, and made his journey public. His ability to use mind over matter, to never give in, to overcome pain, to believe in himself and his will to succeed gave him two extra years on the prognosis.

He worked hard to keep hope alive for himself and his family, and for other cancer sufferers too, defying expectations time and time again. Jim died on 27 March 2012, a month shy of his forty-sixth birthday. A state funeral was held at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne, with thousands of mourners watching from Federation Square. A memorial service was also held at his local Ballyroan parish church in Dublin.

Jim kept diary notes throughout his battle with cancer, and spent many months talking about his life with his long-time friend, journalist Warwick Green. My Journey celebrates the legacy of Jim Stynes, offering an intimate portrait of a man learning to face his fears and get the most out of every single day.

    A very memorable account of one man's struggle with a disease that has reached epidemic proportions and that everyone will be faced with either as a sufferer or as one caring for a sufferer. This book gives us an inspirational insight into how Jim Stynes dealt with this devastating disease, and how his beautiful and stoic wife Sam coped as his primary cater. You don't have to know anything about AFL or even like the game to understand the man Jim was. Here you are presented with a warts-n-all picture or a man determined to live and give every moment of every day even in the face of undergoing more than 21 tumour removals, countless hospital stays, tests, drug trials, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as extreme exhaustion as a result of these things and from the disease itself. The beauty in this book is Jim's realisation of what's really important in life: People, in particular his wife and children. But Jim's love of all people comes through in every page and this was borne out through his inception of the Reach program, prior to his cancer diagnosis. Jim frankly argues that his ego has been responsible for his success as a footballer and in his work with children and teenagers but the reader will easily feel the great love of life and people coming through in this book - indeed, Jim's heart did beat true.

From making the commitment early in life to leave his family in the quest for sporting success to then find himself having to fight the toughest of challenges. The balancing act to give of himself to his passions - football, family and foundation for youth was challenging enough let alone be dealt blow after blow in his fight for life. You have taught a lot of us about the true meaning of life and to embrace every angle of it.
