    I found the concept of the story really interesting, however it was constantly being thwarted with flashbacks at every turn. This made it a chore to read. As soon as the story started getting good...another flashback took it off track. Lots of flowery language drew out simple concepts, sometimes for pages at a time, and I found myself skipping over a lot of it just to try to get back to the story at hand. It was somewhat disappointing. I hope the tv series is more engaging.

    Totalitarian regimes, autocracy, patriarchy, civil rights abuses, power, lust, religion, rape, reproduction, honour, idealism...a dystopian future with historical precedents & current world crises...& all wrapped up in an enigmatic love story! So freaking good! I can't believe I hadn't discovered this 1985 story before! Now I've read the book (in a day) & watched the tv series. But I have questions: does she escape? What happens to Nick? What about Luke? Her daughter? Evil Serena? I need to know more! But there isn't a second book!! Can't wait until the next series comes on!!!!

    This is one of the best books I've read, ever! The writing is so captivating and engaging. The story is terrifying, because you slowly realise that this could actually happen today, which was the author's intention I believe.
