About the author

Laura Hillenbrand is the author of the number one bestsellers Unbroken and Seabiscuit, which won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The film it inspired was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. She served as a consultant on the Universal Pictures feature film based on Unbroken. Hillenbrand’s New Yorker article, ‘A Sudden Illness’, won the 2004 National Magazine Award, and she is a two-time winner of the Eclipse Award. She and actor Gary Sinise co-founded Operation International Children, a charity that provided school supplies to children through American troops. She lives in Washington, D.C.

    Wonderfully written. Thank you for giving us an insight into WW2 in the Pacific. Very educational and a must read for high schoolers.

    Although this book is some 1136 pages long when using size 12 font in iBooks, the last three hundred or so are dedicated to cross references, indices and such, take out the first few hundred pages of Zamperini's childhood and the amount of this book dedicated to his actual wartime experiences, and you have a very enjoyable and fascinating account of one mans fight against well recorded Japanese brutality! I did find myself flipping over pages in the first page of the book but once you get to the actual crash of his bomber, you can't put it down! Overall I enjoyed it immensely though feel it could be condensed quite a lot and get rid of the last three hundred pages!

    An amazing read that I could not put down once I started. Louis' story is written so well and full of insight, not since Life of Pi have I read a book that has left such a lasting impression.

    This is the first book I have read cover to cover for at least ten years. It takes a lot to inspire me to read but this story somehow gripped me like no other has. The life and pure determination of Mr Zamperini is a real inspiration and we could all learn something from his story. Highly recommend to all.

    This is quite simply one of the best books ever written. The read-500-pages-in-one-sitting level has never been higher in a book. Must buy.
