    I can't believe it was written in 1719.. it's fascinating & varies so differently from how modern novels read.. it's not predictable. I needed to skim the many pages of religious moral awakening (pretty much condenses into guilt about not lowering oneself before God & constantly praising his name), which give insight into the thinking at the time

    Very wordy and sometimes tedious in his descriptions, Daniel Defoe has, nevertheless, written a fascinating account of the times in which he lived. The very English attitudes to people of other races, colours and cultures sounds very dated today - as one would expect and hope. As a 'Boy's Own' adventure story it is full of surprises and infinite detail. A tall tales that has stood the test of time, being still in print, this book is most interesting as a window into a world long since past.
